Physical activity is defined as a series of movements which require muscular effort and body stamina, in the absence of which the definition of it breaks down. Physical activity refers to all activities, at any level, done during any given time of the day or night, with the exception of sleep. It also includes incidental and intermittent activity incorporated into normal day-to-day activity. Some types of physical activity include sports, gardening, riding, swimming, hiking, aerobics, etc.
Adults need more than exercise to reach the ideal physical activity levels as they tend to sit sedentary during their working hours. A lot of inactive adults are not even aware that they sit inactive for long periods of time. Lack of regular physical activity leaves them no advantage over their peers. They have to start taking the initiative to move around and develop their muscles so as to stay healthy and fit.
One of the main reasons for the development of chronic diseases like obesity and high blood pressure is a lack of regular physical activity. Thus it is extremely important for adults to get moving. A sedentary lifestyle has been associated with a number of health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The better fitness levels attained by adults can prevent all these diseases. It is found that adults who adopt a regular physical activity lifestyle have less tendency to develop heart disease, stroke and other ailments associated with health. Thus high physical fitness levels can prevent a number of serious health conditions among children as well.
